 Accessing full texts

Access to the full text of any particular article is controlled by the publisher concerned. All research articles published by BioMed Central are available online in full, without charge, but this may not be the case for articles from other publishers.

Ways to access the full text of an article

  1. Articles from journals to which you already have a personal/institutional subscription
For articles which are listed in PubMed, you may follow the [Abstract on PubMed] link. The PubMed page typically includes a link to the full text on the publisher's website. Bear in mind that online access to this full text on the publisher's site is usually restricted to subscribers only.
  2. BioMed Central articles
For articles published by BioMed Central, a direct link to the freely available online full text is provided.
  3. Other articles (document delivery options)
For other articles published in journals to which you do not subscribe, you may make use of the [Order article] link, which allows you to pay for delivery of a copy of the article. BioMed Central offers this service in collaboration with Infotrieve. Articles will be delivered in electronic form, where possible. See below for details.

In addition, if an institution operates an OpenURL compliant link resolver (such as SFX), then it can specify that all links from Faculty of 1000 Biology should be routed through that server to the most appropriate destination for its users. Alternatively, institutions can specify that document requests should be forwarded to a designated email address. Or they may specify that no document delivery links should be displayed at all. Please contact your librarian if you have any questions regarding your institution's full text policy.

Infotrieve's document delivery service

Infotrieve has an established reputation in the retrieval and delivery of printed material and is fast becoming the market leader in the delivery of electronic content (eContent). Infotrieve's document delivery service is flexible and intended to match the particular needs of each customer. The Infotrieve service works as follows:

After an article is ordered…

  1. If the article is available electronically, Infotrieve will deliver it directly to the end user's desktop.
  2. If the article is not available electronically, Infotrieve will locate a paper copy and deliver it using the customer's chosen method of delivery, including mail (no charge), fax $1/page), or FedEx ($15.50/in the US per article or $40.00/International per article). Infotrieve's success is built on a near-perfect record of retrieval and delivery of paper articles. If they cannot find an article using our customary channels, they will expand the search to non-US library sources, vendors, publishers, and archives. Infotrieve's fulfillment rate averages over 98% -- proof of their commitment to do "whatever it takes" to deliver requested articles to their valued customers.
  3. If an article is not located within three days, an autoreply e-mail will be sent updating the customer on the status of the search. Most orders for common journals are fulfilled by the next business day. For harder-to-find articles, the turnaround time might be up to three days. If Infotrieve encounter difficulty in retrieving any document, they will send a detailed message via e-mail to the customer.

eContent

The electronic delivery of content (eContent) is fast becoming the expected delivery method for full-text articles, and Infotrieve is leading the way. Infotrieve's close publisher relationships give them the rights to access electronic articles for immediate download. As more and more articles are available in electronic format, they will be marked with an icon. Once ordered, electronic articles are delivered in a PDF file direct to the end user's desktop. Infotrieve's collection of electronic articles continues to grow on a regular basis.

Pricing and Copyright

Pricing for PLATINUM level service is $10.75/US and $12.75/International per article, plus copyright royalties, which vary. Infotrieve ensures copyright compliance on all photocopied materials, so customers never have to worry about potentially costly violations. Copyright clearance is handled through royalty payments to the Copyright Clearance Center, direct agreements with publishers, and copyright-cleared purchases. Infotrieve will reject a document request if copyright compliance cannot be assured.
