David Triggle received his education in the United Kingdom where he received B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from the Universities of Southampton and Hull, respectively. Following post-doctoral work at the University of Ottawa and the University of London, he assumed a position at the University of Buffao in the School of Pharmacy. His subsequent positions were Chair, Department of Biochemical Pharmacology; Dean, School of Pharmacy; Dean of the Graduate School; and University Provost. He is currently the University Professor and President of the Center for Inquiry Institute. He is the author and editor of several books dealing with the autonomic nervous system and drug-receptor interactions, some two hundred and fifty research papers and some one hundred and fifty chapters and reviews. He is currently the editor (with John Tayor) of Comprehensive Medicinal Chemistry (second edition), a series of books entitled, "Drugs. The straight facts", and most recently of "Voltage-gated ion channels as drug targets" (with three of his previous graduate students).
His research interests have always been at the interface of chemistry and pharmacology, with emphasis on drug interactions at neurotransmitter receptors and ion channels. A particular emphasis has been on voltage-gated calcium channels and their interactions with calcium channel ligands. A particular interest has been in the chemistry and pharmacology of 1,4-dihydropyridines, a particularly versatile pharmacophore. Currently, his research and teaching interests have expanded to include the philosophical basis of ethics and issues around the science-policy-public interface through the Center for Inquiry Institute. | Home page
