Jocelyn Rose is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant Biology at Cornell University.
The research interests of my lab are centered on the structure, function and metabolism of plant cell walls and their pivotal role in growth, development and interactions with pathogens. Cell walls represent a major frontier in plant biotechnology, reflecting their importance in a broad range of plant-derived products, contributing to the food, fiber and material science industries.
One approach that we are taking involves the application of functional genomics and proteomics to cell wall research; identifying and characterizing novel cell wall proteins with diverse and currently unknown and unexploited functions. We use tomato fruit development as one of our model systems, as it provides an opportunity to study wall metabolism associated with both cell expansion and fruit softening. We can also take advantage of the expertise in tomato biology at Cornell and work closely with other tomato genomics-related initiatives on campus. To this end we are currently characterizing the dynamics of the cell wall proteome in developing and ripening tomato fruit. We are also interested in profiling changes in the extracellular proteome following pathogen challenge. Many of these proteins are likely to play an important role in disease resistance. A better understanding of plant cell wall metabolism will suggest strategies to engineer new plants and plant products associated with agricultural improvement and other bio-resources.
