Research interests:
Our research focuses primarily on ribosomally-synthesized peptide antibiotics and toxins produced by Gram positive bacteria, with a particular emphasis on lanthionine-containing and non-lanthionine containing bacteriocins. We are endeavouring to develop a better understanding of the post-translational mechanisms involved in lantibiotic synthesis, to establish structure-function relationships, to elucidate mechanisms of action, to identify novel peptides and to investigate various aspects of regulation and immunity.
We are also investigating a number of mechanisms utilized by Gram-positive pathogens, and in particular Listeria monocytogenes, to survive stresses such as low pH, exposure to antimicrobials (including bacteriocins and beta-lactam antibiotics) and those encountered in the macrophage phagosome. |
