Simon McQueen-Mason worked for a number of years as a professional fisherman before studying Biology at Portsmouth Polytechnic, in the UK, from 1984-87. In 1993 he obtained a PhD from The Plant Physiology Program at The Pennsylvania State University in the USA. After a year of post-doctoral work at Penn State, he was awarded a University Research Fellowship by The Royal Society, which he took up at The University of York in 1994. In 1995 The Society of Experimental Biology awarded him the Presidents'' Medal. In 2001 Simon became Professor of Materials Biology in the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products in the Biology Department at The University of York. His research has focussed on the molecular mechanisms of cell wall extension in plants and in particular on a class of proteins called expansins. |
